When arranging home help for the first time the main considerations need to be focused completely with the service user. Families who arrange care can encounter resistance from their loved one, after all it can be hard to ask for help.
Arranging Home Help for the First Time
Usually when we make the initial home visit we find out about needs and so does every other care company, what sets us apart is our service user centred approach. The needs are important yes, but also the desire of the service user, what do they want? Home help can manifest in many different forms, from helping with household tasks, medication reminders and personal care, but what if they are reticent, what if they are against the idea?
Our part is not to cajole a potential service user, more to help allay fears and explain that we are not coming in to take over, simply to help.
Before devising a care plan we sit with the family member(s) and service user and listen… what needs can we help with what would make life easier and just as important what would make life more enjoyable? A chat, a walk in the park, a trip to the shops, some gardening, reminiscences, hobbies, social interactions to name a few requests we receive.
